Remember This??

Subject: Do you Remember THIS???? An incredible look back to what now seems like ancient history!! An early look at an old foe's name!

?Thought you might be interested in this forgotten bit of information..........

It was 1987! At a lecture the other day they were playing an old news video of Lt.Col. Oliver North testifying at the Iran-Contra hearings during the Reagan Administration.

There was Ollie in front of God and country getting the third degree, but what he said was stunning!

He was being drilled by a senator; "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"

Ollie replied, "Yes, I did, Sir."

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't that just a little excessive?"

"No, sir," continued Ollie.

"No? And why not?" the senator asked.

"Because the lives of my family and I were threatened, sir."

"Threatened? By whom?" the senator questioned.

"By a terrorist, sir" Ollie answered.

"Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?"

"His name is Osama bin Laden, sir" Ollie replied.

At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued. Why are you so afraid of this man?" the senator asked.

"Because, sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of", Ollie answered.

"And what do you recommend we do about him?" asked the senator.

"Well, sir, if it was up to me, I would recommend that an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."

The senator disagreed with this approach, and that was all that was shown of the clip.

By the way, that senator was Al Gore!

Also:

Terrorist pilot Mohammad Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners."

However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands, The American President at the time, Bill Clinton, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that all prisoners be released.

Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified.
It was censored in the US from all later reports.

If you agree that the American public should be made aware of this fact, pass this on.

Do Not Break - it is 3 years strong

This is why I always say I love YOU....

This has not been broken since 9/11/01, please keep it going...
This has been kept alive and moving since 9/11. In memory of all those who perished this morning; the passengers and the pilots on the United Air and AA flights, the workers in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and all the innocent bystanders. Our prayers go out to the friends and families of the deceased.

Thanks for the message, Everett. I respect all that. But let me tell you that Ollie North is a very sensitive subject in our family. He basically put us out of the commercial fishing business. I'll never forgive him for that, since I loved managing the boat and making some side money.

See, we'd lease our the boat to a captain, We had absolutely no idea that Ollie North and his boys would hire our boat, one of among about eight, to haul guns to Nicaragua and then haul dope back to Florida. Each load was about 14 tons.

Unfortunately, Ollie forgot to tell the Coast Guard about his little racket and the rest of the story is pretty much a bummer. All our lawyer could do was to say that Ollie was pretty much implicated but the operation was classified as a "national secret." We had to sell the boat to pay the lawyer off.

Now don't tell me that a gun-running dope dealer is some kind of American Idol, OK?

I was making NO excuses for Mr.North at all! And I don't consider him any sort of a hero, More like a big black mark against the USMC. The only reason I passed this on was because of the fact that at least two past presidents and their administrations knew about Bin Laden well before 9/11 and chose to do nothing about it.

Ah, and I shouldn't have gone off about old Ollie. Our security folks have known about Bin Laden for decades, since he started off as a spoiled rich brat from some construction nabob in Saudi Arabia (from whence several 9/11 bombers were reportedly from). Funny, when the former USSR was battling in Afganistan, the US supported the local tribes and even gave them some missiles. Seems like they're coming back our direction now!

Check out Snopes.com...the Ollie North quote is not true.

I checked out snopes It seems that your story is just that. Snopes documents it's sources and backs up it's info with footnotes etc. I think Everett's tale is about the same as Sam's aload of BS.

My intent when posting the link to Snopes was not to call Everett out but just to inform him of the Snopes side of the story. I enjoy reading his blog, but I hate seeing 'urban legends' passed along without being identified as such. In hindsite, an email to Everett may have been a better vehicle for this.

I don't understand, my dad showed me CIA high altitude and USCG low altitude photographs from the lawyer. Perhaps I should keep such secrets to myself. I don't know this Snopes fella but you are free to hold your opinions and I have my right to make own my conclusions and I'll shut up right there. Loose lips sink ships.

Sam - the Snopes article was addressing the Bin Laden story, not yours...

I think Sam was defending himself from the anon who called his story a load of BS.

Well I haven't checked this for a while and hadn't realised it had stirred up a small controversy. Before I posted the article, I tried to call the guy I got it from, but was unable to connect with him. He was still in the Navy attached to FMF (Fleet Marine Forces) and was "on the ground" in that particular affair, so I assumed, albiet incorrectly that he had vetted the tale before passing it on. I don't think he was involved in Ollies 'doings' but was in the same ballpark.

And to the anonymous's, just which particular quote in the piece were you referring to? Or was it just the whole story? I didn't see any quotes, just answers given to questions. Was the whole interview by the alleged Senator a fabrication also? And before I go there to check it out, Who is "snopes" and what are his credentials as far as trustworthiness is concerned? I'm going to try his site right now. Back at you later TIFN

Bah, we'll never know all the details other than Ollie was probably talking about a terrorist component years before it became the "war on terror." I think the man actually did fear for his like, and let's let is reat at that.

I can't resist adding a little more about my dad's 50-foot grouper boat, a design very popular in Florida in the early 1980's. I do so because my dad never said anything was "classified." The airplane pictures showed the vessel covered in plactic bags and I would have doubted it unless we had painted "Miss Texas" with the boat number on the roof, which one could clearly read.

Now the interesting part is that when the Coasties came to intercept the boat in their launches, the boat didn't have any bags on it! The investigators did find crumbs of marijuana residue and smears of gun grease in the holds, however (runs are packed in grease, bags, and boxes to prevent damage and rust).

Man those investigators tore up that boat but never got more than specs and grease smudges. That's really all I know ....

Everett - the whole Ollie North story is an urban legend. I really didn't mean to cause such a ruckus...

what's a little ruckus amongst friends?

I did get to the "snopes" page and it was interesting to say the least! Sorry about getting reeled in by content of the story. Probably because I dislike Mr. Al Gore to much and was happy to see someone "supposedly" stickin' it to him.
I did bookmark the page so I could go back and do some more reading as a couple other things caught my eye. Thanx for the steer mr/mrs/ms Anonymous!

You're welcome Everett. Maybe someone here can answer a question for me...I am a decendant of John Rathbun, one of the original settlers of BI. Does anyone know if he is buried on the island and if so where? Thanks

I saw this story several years ago. According to the Congressional Record, there was no mention of Osama Bin Laden during the Iran-Contra hearings by Oliver North or anyone else. In fact, there was no mention of Osama Bin Laden in the Congressional Record at all in 1987, the year of the hearings.

Also, Senator Al Gore was not a member of the joint House-Senate Iran-Contra Committee and did not do any of the questioning.

One of the charges against North at that time, however, was his accepting a security system for his home as a gift. He said he needed it because of threats against himself and his family by Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidal.

Paul Bedard whose column WASHINGTON WHISPERS appears on USNEWS.com contacted North who confirmed that he never referenced Bin Laden who, in fact, became a friend of the U.S. against Soviet invaders of Afghanistan.
