A Needful Organisation

Is there out here on our little Island a, "people friendly" group that is in need of a few bucks? I know there are lots of organisations that are always needing money for one thing or another. I am looking for one along the lines of the Mary D fund. One that will take what ever money they make and use it for the people that are in dire need. This could also include individuals who have the need. Now why do I ask this you may inquire? Well basically I, 'yam wot I yam, a HAM"! My wife and I, as well as a few others with a musical bent, have been talking for the last couple of years about getting together and putting on a strictly country /western show of songs no newer than 40 years old!! Hell I can't even figure out what these new guys are talking about! But them "ole fellers" knew what to talk about, you know, the guy that ran off with your girlfriend, wife, horse, truck, dog!! What ever!

So we thought it would be fun to do this, and to make some money for needy others at the same time. So if you have any ideas for recipients etc. post them here and if you are of the musical bent and would like to get up there in front of all your friends and make a fool/ass of yourselves like we do on regular occasions, just sign up. WE thought we would try to keep it to ten to twelve singers,or groups, so that each could give full voice to four or five songs in each of a couple of sets. If you don't care to leave your name here, you can email me at elittle@verizon.net, or use that other thing called a telephone. If we get enough interest, maybe we will try to do it this summer when there are lots of folks with deep pockets around. Ukelele's welcome! TIFN

Hey, um, maybe we could raise a little to get WARBLER back to Block Island so she could help sing and play the piano and be happy again. It's your town and you know, she was a real islander, not some foreigner yahoo or something.

Might not work but heck, I'll put 20 dollars on the barrel-head, just to get things moving, just like old Dead-Eye Dick would. I might double-down if some of y'all start coming out of the woods. Myself, I would raise money for any island gals who are having a hard time, not just one person.

I want you to smack down my measely $20 as being offshore bullcrap from Texas and raise it a notch. Let's do something for the needier Block Island gals. A ukulele party might be a start. /Swells

Actually, Sam, I'm not a 'real' Islander - just married one to freshen up the gene pool...so to speak.

Sam said...

Yeah, I know, but being an Islander means something special, even if a temporary marriage thang.

If the locals talk, look, and act like you're an Islander, you're an Islander - good, bad, or indifferent.

You might know folks that move in and consider themselves Islanders. But they just don't fit in somehow. Gotta earn it ... might take a year or two or maybe never. /sammie

Hey.. you know here in the Western World, you are basically issued your volunteer badge upon arrival, the one near and dear to my heart is the Children's Defense Fund.

Raising money for the Island's youth, be they infants and toddlers who need day care, or the middle schoolers (and younger) who, judging from what my own daughter had to say during her time at the BI School, could use someplace that reminds them it's OK to be kids--really kids-- for just a while longer.. what about those causes?
I don't know, just from my experience I don't think it would be bad to send a message of support to the Island Youth.

On the other hand, after reading your last post, it sounds like a noble cause might be sprucing up some of the um-- Athletic-- equipment at the school, or expanding the temporary parking up there.
Come to think of it, couldn't the parking downtown use some attention in the way of funding too? That's just downright scary at this point. There's bound to be SOMEONE who is willing to be paid off to free up some space.

Not that this falls into the needy category, but what about raising money for a portable stage for the school?
Fall and Spring concerts would be more enjoyable for those in attendance, if the students could be seen as well as heard. This will also, no doubt, encourage future generations to make fool/assess of themselves, as you say. It's funding the arts, a worthy cause of it's own.

Andy, No sooner said than done! In the cafeteria storage closet there now resides 23 pieces of Wenger Portable staging pieces of various heights! They were delivered too the school last thursday by Kirk L. who went to the mainland with his truck to pick them up. Music teacher Tom Gregory set the whole process in motion when he found the set for sale at a VERY good price. SOmetimes your wishes DO come true!

Well, Ev, there you have it. Talk about what's wrong with the system, and you have 52 responses and various off-topic heated diatribes. Ask for input on how to help a good cause, and there's crickets chirping in the background.

How about making a 'scholarship' to the school for the production of a play or musical? You know I only suggest that because of who I am. Or maybe you could help support the senior class trip? Or help with funding for...oh crap, I'm gonna catch flack for this one...I can't remember the name of the ...got it! the 7th grade trip aboard the Harvey Gammage.

At our high school in Clinton they had a great play and music department, might still do. Anyway, we sold candy bars and parents saved money and some "angels" kicked in money so we could do 3 things I remember the best:

- seeing a play on Broadway, Man of La Mancha

- trip to Nova Scotia to play with a high school band up there

- bringing in a professional music group to help with a production of our play, Oliver Twist

Gosh those were fun things. And sailing is always good, Warbler!

Hey Everett - I was listening in on a conversation from some very reliable sources and a 'cause' that is in dire straits right now is that of the Easter Bunny. There is no money in the Easter nest egg and the bunny has stepped down. The runners are willing to step up to the plate for delivery but no one can bankroll the tradition.

Ev you want to some good why don't you join the Lions Club. In our 12 years we have raised and donated over $400,000 to various island groups and people. We are always looking for new members to lend a hand.

I'm not much of a "joiner" but I do have respect for organizations such as the Lions Club, which can raise a phenomenal amount of money for the local good. Plus, you can have unlimited pancakes and Budweiser all in the same day ... or was that the Kiwanis? Kidding aside, there are tons of good groups ... start the Tiki or variety show theme and people will come... /sam

What does Stan have to do with this?

Sam said...

No worries, mate, just some bloke trying to shoot a booger across the bow of a clipper ship, as usual.

I ask again what does Stan have to do with this?

I'm not sure if I am doing the right thing by posting here, but after seeing the continuing random insults, I think this could be the place. If it isn't I'm sorry. I am not very familiar with the workings of a blog site. I seldom have time in my busy schedule to view them. Someone did point out to me that I had been attacked, for no apparent reason and I thought it would only be fair to my friends to be clear on a few points so that they might not be giving the wrong idea.
It appears that some opinions were given that I was committing an act of fraud against our govt. and I am rather lazy and choose a very light work schedule which in addition to being supported by other tax payers through unemployment, also sets a bad example for my children.
I will try to clear all of the following up however if any details are needed, people will have to call me at home for specifics since there are some specifics I don't feel comfortable posting on line. My phone number is listed and you obviously were specific enough that you must know my name, though I can't say the same for you.
I operate a restaurant for 7 to 8 months a year which is a far cry from 4 to 5. I am not collecting unemployment because I have a second company I operate called "Cottage Services of Block Island" which keeps me busy for about 6 months a year. This actually gives me a period during the year when I have two jobs. I am a registered contractor. I have contractors insurance.
In addition to my two paying careers I serve on our school committee and our Recreation board.
I am one of the top responding rescue assistants on our volunteer rescue squad.
I am not about tooting my own horn but in a matter of defense I felt I must.
I will give you this one point where you were correct. I am Chubby, and I just want you to know, I'm gonna work on that. hehe
I will only say one thing. I think one of the saddest things is when someone doesn't know just how much they don't know.

Everett said...

Hey!! Come on now! I was a sailor for twenty years and didn't have even one "boy friend"!!!

Sam said...

Hey Chubby don't be skeered about these blog things and it was good to hear you from afar ... on what seems like a pretty messy night on the Island. Everett, I recon you aren't wearing your "Nantucket Coolers," huh? Folks just that means summer shorts and ain't gay sailor talkin'.

I think we started out Everett saying he wanted to help some needy people, people who didn't really want to be identified because they're too proud but too poor to refuse the cash. If you catch what I'm saying, some people are just too ornery to come out and say they need help.

The time between now and Memorial Day is really heck for some of these folks. They don't have a lobster boat or a couple of businesses like ole Chubby here. They don't have any hay or taters to sell.

If you were a real person, a true gemtleman or lady, you'd just press a hundred or two in their hands and say to get some food and presciptions and all that. They don't want an ID. They don't want a show. They are too dang proud for all that noise.

But they will appreciate it and you might feel like you really did something good. If you want to have fun, have a Ukulele party. If you want to help out some of the less fortunate on the Island, you know what to do.

Hey Chub,
I couldn't help but notice your blatant disregard for the proper use of punctuation. Lord knows you don't have a third career as an author.

anon of 6:11 March 17th. At least Chubby has the balls to put his name to what he writes. Unlike you!!!!!!!! There are to many people in this town that like to put their noses in everyone else business. My english might not be correct all the time, but at least I put my name to it!!!!Yours truly KAL

To KAL,
I apologize for my earlier comment. You are 100% right. I know neither of the parties involved and should have stayed out of it. Sorry, 6:11

So Mr. school committe member, now that you are, why is food allowed all over the school?

Everett said...

To Anony, at 3/17/07 at 8:14, There was no name on one of the tanks out there. Was that yours? We don't fill them anymore without a name on board. Too many of them just walked home by themselves with out benefit of payment.:)

does anyone know who wrote the comment about stan ,i thought that was quite funny (a fart in the wind)

Sam said...

I dunno that last post made me wonder if I was talking to a bunch of Coon-Asses down on the Atchafalaya River in Louisiana. There's an old story that the Arcadians brought huge lobsters from Down East to Louisiana but they got to eating on the them so much they were just the small crawfish "mud-bugs" by the time they arrived.

As my Chinese friends say, "You velly velly funny peoples. Wassa madda, you no like polk?" /sammie

Well, Ev, I think you've succeeded in proving that there are those who are entirely UNinterestested in worthy causes.

Anonymous said...

what's the worthy cause? As I said before alot of people are already involed in meaningful organizations with concrete fund raising motives. Not pie in the sky stuff of maybe we'll do this or that and most likley will continue to do nothing, but talk. Join up with the groups already up and running.

Anonymous said...

Um?
Isn't Sam's last post rather racist in its remarks?
Haven't seen anything racist here before.

I don't think you have to have an organization to raise money, friend. Our Island is just is little larger than BI and we have fundraisers all the time. There are too many examples, but we raised $8,000 for a gal with cancer, planted 200 trees in memory of somebody's son, and raised money to save an old bookstore. All the money goes to the needy person or cause, no overhead or administrative stuff. We just dump the cash in a hat and give it to 'em, hat and all. /sam

To Chubby:

Since you're new to the whole idea of blogging & all, allow me to provide a bit of well-meant advice I picked up from Wallis Simpson:

"Never explain, never complain."

And NEVER, NEVER apologize to some anonymous coward.

kWhy not the Mary D Fund, why something "along the lines of the Mary D Fund"?

There is also the senior lunch program that can always use funds.

Or, you could raise money to offset the cost of medical screening for seniors (eyesight, gloucoma, hearing, skin cancer, etc.)

And there is always the library. According to the paper, they need more money to have their carpets cleaned more often (tongue in cheek, of course).

I must retract. Obviously there are still some folk who were interested in commenting on the actual subject. With many worthy suggestions as well.
